Tamil Nadu govt issues new Covid guidelines for liquor stores in state

Apart from the announcement of a night curfew between 10 pm and 4 am and a complete lockdown on Sundays, the Tamil Nadu government has also announced a set of new restrictions for liquor outlets in view of the rising Covid-19 cases.
Each token to have timings, managers told to monitor stock The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) is back to the token system that it was following post the lifting of the previous lockdown in 2020.
According to a communication sent by the Tasmac Managing Director to senior regional managers of all districts, timings must be mentioned in the tokens to ensure that not many persons gather in front of the shops. No token should be given after 4 p.m.
All Tasmac outlets across the State have been told to down shutters and close business by 9 p.m. Those working in the shops have been instructed to erect barricades in front of the shops for regulating crowds and minimum two personnel per shop should stand outside the outlet to ensure that social distancing is being maintained.

Its election time and prohibition is back in focus in Tamil Nadu where the dry law was lifted about five decades ago.
Political parties, including the ruling AIADMK, opposition DMK and Congress, have pitched for a complete ban on liquor, albeit in a phased manner, making the promise in their respective manifestos for the April 6 assembly elections.
Total prohibition was in force in the state from 1937 to 1971 when the then DMK government headed by M Karunanidhi lifted it first.

A group of villagers, who opposed the setting up of a liquor shop at Umaiyaval Arcot hamlet near here, staged a road roko on Wednesday.
Residents of Umaiyaval Arcot, Panaveli and Nagaththi villages near here came to know that the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) was planning to set up a liquor shop at Umaiyaval Arcot hamlet. They submitted representations to the authorities concerned seeking cancellation of the move. As the authorities did not give up, the villagers squatted on Thanjavur-Ariyalur Road at Ammanpettai. Traffic was disrupted for more than three hours.
