SC allows Vedanta to produce only Oxygen at Tutocorin plant IANS  0 The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Vedanta s Sterlite plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu to produce oxygen, as it is a national need .   The court said that only the Oxygen plant will be allowed to operate and that the order was passed in view of the national need for oxygen and allowed Vedanta to operate its Sterlite copper unit at Tuticorin to produce oxygen while specifying that only the Oxygen plant will be operational.   Passing the order, the bench clarified, allowing Vedanta to operate its Oxygen plant would not create any equity in favour of the company.

Shares of Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta Ltd jumped 5 per cent to Rs 239 on the BSE in the intra-day deals on Monday amid report that Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami has allowed the company to operate its Tuticorin plant to produce oxygen amid sharp surge in Covid-19 cases in the country. According to a PTI report, an All-party meeting by Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami, convened earlier today, allowed Vedanta s Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin to produce oxygen for four months. The order, however, added that Vedanta cannot involve the plant in copper production or any other activities, the report added. The decision comes after the Supreme Court said on Friday why couldn t Vedanta operate the plant given the emergency-like situation in the country due to Covid-19. The SC had agreed to hear Vedanta s plea on the ground that it will produce a thousand tonnes of oxygen and give it free of cost to treat patients.

Tamil Nadu lets sterlite to open unit to make oxygen Updated Apr 27, 2021, 12:27 am IST Sterlite had promised to provide the oxygen produced in the plant free of cost to hospitals in Tamil Nadu  The Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu (PTI) Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government decided to allow Sterlite Industries to produce Oxygen at its Copper Smelter plant in Thoothukudi on Monday even as Advocate General Vijay Narayan told the Madras High Court that most of the oxygen manufactured there was of industrial quality and not fit for medical use. Though the nod to open the oxygen manufacturing plant alone was given for four months, on a temporary basis, at an all-party meeting, attended by representatives of ‘recognised political parties,’ leaders of a few other political parties came down heavily on the decision.
