The Government Kilpauk Medical College will operate two counters to sell Remdesivir, according to Dean P. Vasanthamani.
On Monday, the State Health Department launched a counter at KMC to sell the drug. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation set up a counter after people complained of the steep price of the injection in the open market. The drug is administered to people who are on oxygen support. Some people complained that the drug had to be procured from other States, and it was priced as high as ₹20,000. The government is selling the drug at ₹1,560 a pack.

‘People needn’t travel long distances to buy the drug’
PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Wednesday said that Remdesivir, a drug used in the treatment of COVID-19 patients, should be made available even in the districts as it is becoming difficult to source it for patients.
In a statement, he said the price of Remdesivir drug had gone up many times because of increase in demand.
“After Central government intervention, the price of the drug, which was selling at ₹5,400, has been fixed between ₹899 and ₹3,490. The drug was sold in the black market anywhere between ₹10,000 and ₹25,000,” said Dr. Ramadoss.
He said in Kilpauk Medical College, people had to stand in queues for a long time to buy the drug.

The Tiruppur branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) recently wrote to the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) flagging the shortage of anti-viral drug Remdesivir used in the treatment for COVID-19 in private hospitals.
In the letter written on Friday, IMA Tiruppur secretary M.P. Senthilkumar said that around 20 private hospitals were treating COVID-19 patients in the district and that these hospitals were allegedly unable to purchase Remdesivir from private pharmaceutical companies. Noting that the drug was important for patients suffering from severe COVID-19 cases to prevent further worsening of their condition, Dr. Senthilkumar requested the TNMSC to provide Remdesivir injections to the private hospitals in Tiruppur district at the earliest.
