Northern Ireland train connections to be examined in review Shauna Corr The lack of rail connections in NI and indeed Ireland’s northwest is to be considered in a game changing strategic rail review for the whole island. Stormont Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon, and RoI’s Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan TD, said its aim is to explore opportunities to better connect communities and boost the economy. The review, which was promised under the New Decade, New Approach deal, will be carried out by external consultants. Minister Mallon added: “Travel by rail is an issue I am very passionate about and I believe it has massive untapped potential to deliver multiple benefits across our island.

Updated / Wednesday, 7 Apr 2021 19:18 A cross-border review of Ireland s rail network has been launched.  The Strategic Rail Review will consider how the rail network on the island can improve sustainable connectivity between major cities, enhance regional accessibility including to the North West and support balanced regional development.  It will also consider the feasibility of higher speeds on the network and whether there is a potential to increase use of the network for freight.  Stormont Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon and Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan announced the review.  Ms Mallon said she is passionate about rail travel.  I believe it has massive untapped potential to deliver multiple benefits across our island, she said.
