Editorial — Test information vital: State assessments will show what went right/wrong last year

The union representing public school teachers throughout New York is setting a poor example by promoting a regressive act of protest. New York State United Teachers recently mounted a campaign to remind parents that they have the right to keep their children from taking the state assessments being offered later this month. The union’s pitch is this: “This year has tested our kids enough. Parents: Know your rights to opt your kids out of the state tests.” We agree that the novel coronavirus has put everyone through the wringer. It’s been especially difficult for teachers and school administrators who’ve crafted various methods of instructing students — sometimes in person, sometimes virtually and sometimes both ways simultaneously. We applaud education professionals for the innovation and flexibility they’ve exhibited in delivering the best classroom lessons possible during this time.

FSA testing has some kids, parents feeling anxious

FSA testing has some kids, parents feeling anxious - and last updated 2021-04-05 07:36:43-04 FSA testing begins Monday for kids throughout Florida. It was canceled last year because of the rush to distance learning when the pandemic first started. While it can be stressful for kids, it s equally nerve-wracking for parents. Students are required to take the tests in person, including e-learners. For some parents, that adds an extra layer of worry with them back on campus. There s also growing concern about how the scores will impact the kids. They can influence graduation and whether a student is promoted to the next grade level.

PUSD overhauls teacher evaluations

The Payson school board recently approved a new teacher evaluation system that drops teacher-proposed “smart goals” in favor of a host of volunteer activities. The system will still rely heavily on measurements of student progress, but would now include a wider range of additional criteria when it comes to doling out the $3,800 bonus for “effective” teachers. Student test scores now determine 25% of the teacher’s evaluation. Almost the entire faculty has already voted to approve the new, “more rigorous” evaluation system, as required by Proposition 301. Voters approved the measure in 2000, which established the “merit pay” system for teachers funded by a 0.6% increase in the sales tax plus money from the sale of state lands.
