GRAND FORKS Sen. John Hoeven is pushing for funding for U.S. Air Force programs that impact North Dakota and play a role in national defense and gathering intelligence.
As a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee, Hoeven, R-N.D., spoke with Acting Air Force Secretary John Roth to advocate for North Dakota defense priorities. Hoeven outlined the importance of fully funding nuclear modernization efforts, and also the Global Hawk fleet, a portion of which occupies Grand Forks Air Force Base.

Seventy percent of the Air Force s overall weapons budget goes to sustainment costs, keeping its ever-aging fleet of combat planes in shape to fly. Couple that with a smaller-than-planned F-22 Raptor buy and developmental quagmires on the companion F-35, and the service faces challenges to fulfill all its missions.
