The Rainier School District will be participating in a state-funded pilot program on COVID-19 testing and screening that is expected to expand testing capacities locally while also helping the state further understand the efforts of school-based testing and screening programs.
The school district is one of 10 districts in the state to participate in the voluntary program, which is being conducted through a collaboration between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Washington state Department of Health, the district says.
âThis pilot program will help contain the virus, protect our communities and keep students and teachers safe and healthy whether they are remote or in-person,â a recent letter from the district read.
Thurston County Public Health and Social Services advised residents this week to be aware that COVID-19 testing sites would likely have different hours over the upcoming holidays.

Dec. 22 Confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose by 22 on Tuesday, giving Thurston County an overall total of 4,376 cases to date, county health data show.
The county also updated the number of people who have been hospitalized at some point during their illness (251) and those who have have recovered from the virus or are recovering (3,700). Those numbers were previously 247 hospitalized and 3,288 recovered/recovering, according to the data.
Fifty people have died to date, including a man in his 70s on Sunday, according to Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.

Dec. 22 One more person has died as Thurston County reported 36 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, giving the county 343 cases over the past week.
In all, there have been 4,354 cases and 50 deaths in the county, according to Thurston County Public Health and Social Services. Of that total, 247 have been hospitalized at some point in their illness, and 3,288 have recovered or are recovering.
The number of recovering or recovered patients has remained unchanged since Dec. 13 when it jumped significantly from 2,130 to 3,288.
