Bettcher’s emergence as a candidate sprung up when it was reported that he interviewed for the position earlier in the week. This isn’t the first time Bettcher has had his hat in the ring for the Bears’ defensive coordinator gig. When Vic Fangio’s return in 2018 was up-in-the-air, Bettcher was considered a possible replacement option. Fangio returned to the Bears, while Bettcher moved on to run the Giants’ defense. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has hired Maurice Linguist and George Helow to be assistants on defense, the latest moves that have reshaped his coaching staff. Harbaugh announced the additions Wednesday night, adding that defensive line coach Shaun Nua has agreed on a contract extension and confirming Brian Jean-Mary will return to coach linebackers. Harbaugh hired Baltimore Ravens linebacker coach Mike Macdonald as defensive coordinator on Sunday, replacing Don Brown, who is now defensive coordinator for the Arizona Wildcats.
