A senior health official on Wednesday said the coronavirus pandemic is still here and Israel is in the midst of a battle against the pathogen.
Head of Public Health Services at the Health Ministry Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis made the statement just days after claiming the pandemic in Israel was dying out and the ministry is considering scrapping the outdoor mask mandate.

Head of Public Health Services at the Health Ministry Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis said on Tuesday that the coronavirus pandemic in Israel is beginning to die out despite a slight increase in the virus reproduction (R) number.
Israel’s R number which indicates how many other people are infected by a virus carrier has seemingly jumped from 0.52 to 0.78 in no more than a week. However, the senior health official says there is no reason to panic.

Head of Public Health Services in the Health Ministry Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis on Monday said she was concerned that new coronavirus variants could enter Israel through the Ben Gurion International Airport. We know the vaccines are effective against the British [coronavirus] variant but there is also the South African mutation against which the shots are less effective, Alroy-Preis said in a press conference. We must make sure that variants do not enter the country.
