The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a huge move Monday to alleviate some of their issues against the Projected Salary Cap for next Season. With a decision about the future of Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger still looming, the Team restructured with their other Captain – Cam Heyward.
The move converts Cam Heyward’s roster bonus and base salary into a signing bonus to create $7 million in cap room, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Heyward will still receive the $10.5M he was due for 2021, but will be paid via one bonus instead of over the term of his base salary. The restructure is a standard conversion procedure for a team looking to create space. Pittsburgh’s current cap situation, which leaves the Steelers over the cap by roughly $19M after the Heyward restructure with a projected cap of $180M (the current cap floor, per the NFL). Steelers Struggle Late in the Season 1:10 am
Head Coach Mike Tomlin spoke about the Pick Six that changed the complexion of Sunday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the second in a row for the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger’s Pick Six put Buffalo up for good right before the Half. The Steelers struggled to get much going the rest of the game offensively against a Bills Defense much improved in the second half of the Season. In the loss, Steelers Lineman Matt Feiler has been placed on IR. As injuries continue to mount for the Black and Gold. A lot needs to improve if the Steelers are to get this turned around. The run game has been non existent, but for the second straight week Ben takes the blame on his shoulders. He said if he cant play better, maybe he should hang ’em up. Head Coach Mike Tomlin, after the Steelers Week 13 effort against the Washington Football Team was undermined by receivers dropping the ball, stated that if players don’t catch the ball, he would replace them with players who would.
He kept his word.
Offense
Diontae Johnson dropped two early passes and would spend a big chunk of the game on the bench. He returned late in the game, and his drop free return sparked a touchdown drive to bring the Steelers within one score of the Bills.
If Johnson can turn things around and get off the drop-infested skid he’s been on the last three games, this offense will be much better for it. When Johnson’s hands are reliable he’s the Steelers most effective receiver, when he is dropping balls, he hinders the offense.
