The election has drawn a slate of candidates opposed to comprehensive sexuality education.
In October 2019, the Hillsboro school board in Washington County unanimously adopted a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum.
While the vote had no dissenters, the topic was anything but uncontroversial. The curriculum was approved at the conclusion of a more-than-three-hour meeting that drew hundreds of attendees. Some who addressed the board during the meeting expressed strong support for the curriculum. Others implored the school board not to support it, citing explicit and inappropriate course materials and lesson plans.
With the curriculum up for review every two years, Hillsboro Online Academy student Ceph Tronco is worried the next school board will side with the critics next time.

The Beaverton School District hosted a virtual forum for candidates to answer live questions over Zoom.
Candidates for the Beaverton School Board answered questions from the community during a virtual forum hosted by the Beaverton School District, Wednesday, April 28.
Four seats on the School Board are up for election on May 18, and all four are contested by two candidates. Every candidate was present for the forum.
The event started off with introductory remarks from incumbent Susan Greenberg and opponent Jeanette Schade running for Zone 1, followed with statements from Karen Peréz-Da Silva and Fuhua Xu, hopefuls to win an open seat for Zone 2. Schade previously faced a backlash after protesters learned her platform opposes critical race theory and comprehensive sexuality education.

Oregon s Legislature can take a powerful step towards helping advance future generations of BIPOC leaders by passing the Civics Education Act (Senate Bill 513).
My lived experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the importance of civics education and civic engagement. Civics can help make local democracy work for everyone by building a platform for rising leaders who can represent a great diversity of cultures and lived experiences. It is our responsibility, as the current generation of leaders, to ensure that the next generation of Oregon leaders graduate high school equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage productively with our system of governance. We are falling short of that responsibility.

As we came to grips with the fact that Dr. de la Cruz would not be leading us beyond this school year, we thought seriously about the needs of our district.
From the moment that our Lake Oswego School Board offered Dr. Lora de la Cruz the position of Superintendent in December 2018, she has shown exceptional leadership, integrating seamlessly into the community and quickly becoming respected and admired by many. She has consistently led with courage, empathy and grace through an unimaginable set of circumstances. To say that we are sad to see her leaving sooner than expected is an understatement; however, it is with unwavering support for her personally that we have accepted her resignation, effective June 30.
