Maryland Framework Offers Connected, Automated Vehicle Guide

With an eye toward the future of transportation technology, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan released the state’s Connected and Automated Vehicle Strategic Framework.
While the transportation sector adapts to new technologies, the framework is meant to inform and guide industry representatives as they shape their own plans for CAV deployment. The framework offers a description of Maryland’s CAV landscape today while outlining five focus areas for the future: public education and outreach, planning and policy, early deployment and testing, workforce development and infrastructure.

Utah earned a C+ on its most recent infrastructure report card, according to preliminary findings from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
ASCE representatives disclosed the report card results virtually Dec. 16 due to coronavirus-related safety concerns.
The report card evaluated 12 categories of infrastructure: aviation, bridges, canals, dams, drinking water, hazardous waste, levees, solid waste, stormwater, roads, transit and wastewater.
“We know that strong infrastructure is beneficial to the economy by enabling goods to travel over our bridges and highways, allowing employees to reach their offices in a timely and safe manner and keeping businesses operational through extreme weather or seismic events,” said Darren Burton, president of ASCE’s Utah section.

Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled a second-generation fuel cell system that is nearing the point when it could be offered to heavy-duty truck builders looking to build hydrogen-powered tractors.
The new fuel cell stack is based on the system that is in Toyota’s 2021 Mirai passenger sedan that goes on sale this month. But it is double the size to handle the power needs of a Class 8 truck.
“Our first prototype trucks proved that a fuel cell electric powertrain was capable of hauling heavy cargo on a daily basis. These new prototypes not only use production-intent hardware, they will also allow us to start looking beyond drayage into broader applications of this proven technology,” Andrew Lund, chief engineer at Toyota Motor North America Research and Development, said in a Dec. 10 news release.
