Anti-encroachment drive on nullahs suspended, meeting informed

May 20, 2021 KARACHI: The Karachi Coordination Committee was informed on Thursday that the removal of encroachment from the city’s nullahs has been suspended after a court order, ARY News reported. A session of the committee, constituted for the uplift of the city, was chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The meeting was informed that the anti-encroachment drive at Mehmoodabad Nullah, Gujjar Nullah and Orangi Nullah, has been halted after the Sindh High Court’s restraining order. The meeting discussed removal of illegal encroachment from the city, funding for various initiatives and other concerned issues. The session was briefed that 260 MGD K-IV project for the city will be completed with an estimated cost of 60 billion rupees within three years. Till now 11.3 bln rupees have been spent on the project and 2.4 bln rupees have been allocated for the project this year.

Sindh ban on corporal punishment against students extended to religious seminaries

Karachi: The Sindh government has banned corporal punishment against students at religious seminaries. The decision was reached in the latest meeting of the Sindh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The meeting took into consideration the draft rules pertaining to the Sindh Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Act-2016. The Sindh government’s Department of School Education presented the rules in the cabinet meeting. The law envisages that handing down physical punishments to the students in any educational institution of the province becomes a criminal offence against which police could lodge a case. The rules passed by the Sindh cabinet declare that any act causing physical, mental, and emotional harm to the students would become a criminal offence. The rules further declare that the sexual exploitation of students will also be a punishable act in the province.

Mr Shah said that around Rs50 billion was spent for payment of salaries and retired employees’ pension, excluding employees of local government institutions.
