Farmers in Haryana didn t go as far as those in neighbouring Punjab, but the protests over the Centre s new agri-marketing laws kept politics on the boil in this state as well in the closing months of the year. The year was also marked by a new Haryanvis First policy on jobs, a law in the making against the so-called love jihad and a tussle between the chief minister and the home minister over a coveted police department. All this against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, which tested Haryana as it did the rest of the country. Months before the current agitation over the Centre s three new farm laws erupted, the opposition Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal had already begun raising farmers issues in the state.
Farmers protest: Villagers in Haryana s Karnal have boycotted all BJP and JJP leaders.
Chandigarh:
Qadirabad has become the latest in a long line of villages in Haryana that have called for complete boycott of all leaders from state s ruling coalition parties - the BJP and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) - including Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his deputy Dushyant Chautala.
If you enter the village, you will be welcomed with
chhittar (shoes) , not garlands, said villagers in Karnal s Qadirabad in support of farmers demand for complete rollback of the three recently enacted agriculture reform laws they deem anti-farmer .
For the last fortnight, several BJP MPs, ministers and MLAs have faced the wrath of farmers.
Amid rising incidents of farm protesters blocking, and in a some instances attacking, the vehicles of the ministers and MLAs of the ruling coalition, intelligence agencies in Haryana have advised the lawmakers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ally Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) not to move out without adequate security cover, especially in the rural areas in the state.
There have several incidents in the past few days that have got the state police and intelligence wing worried. From damaging a helipad at Parha village of Karnal district where Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was to land, to another such incident in Uchana where villagers dug up a temporary helipad in anticipation that Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala would land there on a visit to his constituency, farmers protesting against three central agri laws have increasingly been taking on the MLAs and MPs
