No new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Queensland after a returned traveller stayed in a Brisbane backpackers hostel for days while infectious.
But mask mandates, which were due to be lifted on Friday, will be extended for 11 south-east Queensland local government areas, including Brisbane, for a fourth time since lockdowns were lifted earlier this month.
Just one new overseas acquired case was reported from more than 25,000 tests, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said in a media briefing on Thursday.
Ms D’Ath said genomic sequencing had confirmed the returned traveller contracted the Alpha variant of the virus on his flights from the Philippines to Papua New Guinea and on to Brisbane on July 3, where he completed 14 days in a quarantine hotel.
