Share Via Email   |  A+A A- By Express News Service BHUBANESWAR: Odisha has made significant progress in controlling malaria with 90 per cent reduction in number of cases over the last three years due to targeted interventions by the State government. The rate of reduction of the vector-borne disease between 2018 and 2019 was 40 per cent against the national average of 17 per cent during the same period.  “Around 4.44 lakh malaria positive cases and 77 deaths were recorded in 2016 which reduced to 39, 556 cases and nine deaths in 2019,” said Director Public Health Dr Niranjan Mishra.

Odisha govt sets June 2022 target for Covaxin production at Andharua unit

Construction work of a vaccine production unit has started at Andharua in Bhubaneshwar and a target has been set to commence production of Covaxin by June 2022, the Odisha government has announced. The vaccine unit being set up through Bharat Biotech International Ltd (BBIL) will produce around 10 types of advanced vaccines, including that for coronavirus and malaria, as per a release. The construction of the vaccine production unit because of IDCO s smooth land allotment process and ease of doing business reforms , stated the release further. The required statutory clearances and permissions have also been granted for setting up the unit. It was informed after a state-level Bio-Tech implementation committee meeting held virtually under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra from Lokseva Bhawan wherein Secretary Science and Technology Manoj Mishra outlined the administrative and financial issues for discussion.

The lockdown will be in force from May 5 to May 19. Announcing the lockdown decision, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, however, said that the weekend shutdowns will continue in all urban areas of the State starting from 6pm on Fridays to 5am of Mondays. Public transport by buses, inter-state and intra state will remain suspended till May 19, he said.
