Chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt is standing by his decision to meet with a Waikato chapter of the Mongrel Mob, saying he would take the opportunity again.
Hunt spoke about human rights, responsibilities and social inclusion at a hui hosted by the Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom at the weekend.

“Marama Davidson and Chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt yesterday spoke at an ‘event for justice’ at the Mongrel Mob’s headquarters.
“Sharing the stage with Sonny Fatu – a man who was convicted of the brutal and prolonged torture and beating of Adrian Cochrane – they told the gangs that they’re actually bad because of racism and colonisation.
The Human Rights Commission has welcomed the Governmentâs announcement that an agreement has been reached on the future of disputed lands at IhumÄtao.
âWe agree this is a significant step forward for the mana whenua of IhumÄtao. We also note the inclusion of three ahi kaa representatives on the rÅpu whakahaere steering the development of the land,â Mr Hunt said.
âIt is critical that the mana whenua of IhumÄtao have the ability to be part of decision making on the future of the land which has strong spiritual, cultural and archaeological meaning for them.â
