Confirmed as Attorney General, Merrick Garland will oversee investigation of Jan 6 riot at U S Capitol

Confirmed as attorney general, Merrick Garland will oversee investigation of Jan. 6 Capitol riot Crystal Hill Merrick Garland, a lawyer, federal judge and onetime Supreme Court nominee, was confirmed Wednesday as the nation s attorney general, a position in which one of his duties will be to oversee the Justice Department s investigation into the U.S. Capitol attack. The Senate confirmed Garland, 70-30, on Wednesday afternoon. Although he had some Republican opposition on the Senate Judiciary Committee, his nomination had bipartisan support. Garland, who formerly served as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, said during his confirmation hearing last month that the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol would be one of his top priorities. The Justice Department has filed hundreds of cases against the individuals involved in the riot, which left five people dead and disrupted the counting of Electoral College votes to certify President Biden s win.
