COLOMBO (News 1st): There is a possibility of slight ACID RAINS in addition to the polluted beaches along the Western coast of Sri Lanka due to the distressed MV X-PRESS PEARL, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) warned on Friday (May 28).
“We observed that the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide from the MV X-PRESS PEARL was massive. With the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide gas in the rainy season, there could be slight acid rains,” Dharshani Lahandapura, the Chairperson of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) told News 1st.
Thereby, the MEPA Chairperson sternly advised the general public to be vigilant regarding such inclement weather.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The fire on MV X-PRESS PEARL, a container ship anchored 9.5 nautical miles northwest of the Port of Colombo, is subsiding, said the Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday (27).
As of Thursday morning (27
th May 2021), heavy smoke and small flames were observed from the ship. In the meantime, the Navy in coordination with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) launched a special operation to minimize the impact on the coast due to various debris, including containers wash ashore, after having fallen overboard the fire-damaged ship and to keep the public out of danger from getting in touch with possible chemical compounds contained in such items.

The fire that broke out in the forecastle area of the MV X-PRESS PEARL, a container ship anchored 9.5 nautical miles northwest of the Port of Colombo, is still raging while containers and various parts that are falling overboard the distressed ship have been washed ashore.
The fire has spread throughout the ship and the Navy and the Ports Authority are continuing their operations to control the fire.
In the meantime, Sri Lanka Naval Ship Sindurala as well as Indian Coast Guard Maritime Pollution Control Ships ‘Vajra’ and ‘Vaibhav’ have been deployed on the site where MV X-PRESS PEARL to douse the fire.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have issued a strong warning to the general public to refrain from coming into contact with any debris that washes up on Sri Lanka’s western coast following a massive inferno aboard the container ship named the MV X-PRESS PEARL.
Reports on Wednesday (26) morning noted that people in many areas had rushed to the coastal belt to pick up debris from the blazing ship.
The Sri Lanka Navy also deployed personnel along the western coast to prevent the people from rushing to the beach to collect debris that washed ashore.
