(Bloomberg) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is desperately trying to re-open trade routes to France after a day of cross-Channel political bartering failed to end the chaos at the U.K.’s busiest port.
France shut down freight traffic from Dover in southeast England at midnight on Sunday because of fear over a faster-spreading mutant strain of Covid-19 that forced the U.K. government to impose a strict lockdown on London and surrounding areas. Spain and Portugal, meanwhile, are among more than 40 countries restricting flights and effectively isolating the U.K.

“There were queues everywhere, I saw stockpiling of things like toilet roll again, but with fresh fruit and veg, there wasn’t any,” the 33-year-old said.
“It was like being in a supermarket that hadn’t stocked up in weeks.
“It was crazy. Back like the start of March… (there were) even some people shouting at each other over the last sprouts, talk about Christmas spirit and all that.”
Mr Edger, who works for a local council in London, had returned to Wales on Saturday ahead of the enforcement of new Tier 4 lockdown rules.

Shoppers queued from 5am outside supermarkets amid disruption caused by border closures and fears of food shortages within days.
Online delivery slots were in short supply, with hopes of receiving an order before Christmas all but extinguished as grocers were hit by a combination of chaos in Dover and Christmas plans changing for millions.
Major supermarkets and the Government urged consumers to only buy what they need and insisted there would not be shortages before Christmas Day, but pictures showed long queues in the early hours in Newcastle, London and Cardiff.
