Half of vehicle thefts from unlocked vehicles

Click the thumbs up >In almost half (47%) of thefts from vehicles in England and Wales, new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest that the vehicles were left unlocked. Analysis from insurer Aviva also shows that more than one in five drivers (23%) don’t always lock their vehicles and, in cases where a vehicle was taken, 14% were left unlocked. Broken windows (19%) and forced doors (13%) were the next most common points of access after doors were left unlocked. Aviva is warning drivers to take extra care when leaving their vehicles during the darker winter months. The data shows that four out of five vehicle-related thefts in England and Wales happen during the hours of darkness.

The ports industry lobby group Logistics UK said ports were under substantial pressure and added: “High volumes do remain, and delays could persist for some months.” Zoe McLernon of Logistics UK said: “Covid-19 has caused unprecedented volatility in the supply chain. Add to this the increased seasonal pressures caused by the Christmas retail market, and businesses stocking up ahead of the introduction of customs controls at the end of the transition period, and the pressure on the supply chain is immense.” She added: “Clarity over our future relationship with the EU is vital and we continue to push for confirmation of a free trade agreement.”
