In a letter to government recently, the Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) said the casualisation of labour has become rampant among Zimbabwean mines. The workers group said the problem emanated from the National Employment Council (NEC) which has not gazetted limits on the number of fixed term contracts within the mining industry. “We address the Honourable Minister in reference to rampant casualisation of labour in the mining industry.

This follows a fatal mine accident involving a worker at Zimplats’ Ngwarati-Mine in Mhondoro-Ngezi on Sunday. The worker was one of the contractors who succumbed to injuries sustained after a high wall collapsed at the Ngwarati-Mine box cut. Speaking through Zimbabwe Diamond Allied and Minerals Workers Union of Zimbabwe (ZDAMWU) general secretary Justice Chinhema, ZDAMWU said it was “relieved that the rest of the employees who were underground when the tragedy occurred have been evacuated by the Zimplats Proto Team.”

Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) general secretary Justice Chinhema told NewZimbabwe.com the group was concerned about the unfortunate development. “Our workers union which is pro-miners since obtaining the essential services status to monitor and enforce Covid-19 regulations within mining sites has noted that there are more unreported Covid-19 cases in mines and the cases seem to be very high,” Chinhema said. He said his union stumbled upon the startling revelations while touring mining districts across the country.
