The Expedition 64 crew explored heart cells, muscles and more to understand how microgravity impacts the human body. The Cardinal Heart study has been under way all week with the crew observing engineered heart tissue samples through a microscope in Japan s Kibo laboratory module. The samples are being processed inside the Life Sciences Glovebox to help researchers understand and treat abnormal heart cells and tissues that can lead to disease both on Earth and in space.

American Heart Association offers heart-friendly snow shoveling tips

American Heart Association offers heart-friendly snow shoveling tips Shoveling snow or simply walking through deep, heavy snow increases the workload on the heart and can increase risk for a heart attack, the agency said. Author: Keith Schweigert (FOX43) Updated: 4:54 PM EST December 15, 2020 HARRISBURG, Pa. With a winter storm bearing down on Central PA, the American Heart Association issued a warning Tuesday that colder temperatures and strenuous activity like, say, shoveling snow can be a dangerous combination for your heart. Shoveling snow or simply walking through deep, heavy snow increases the workload on the heart and can increase risk for a heart attack, the agency said. People who do not get regular physical activity or who have existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, are at the greatest risk.

NASA Space Station On-Orbit Status 14 December, 2020 - Orbital Plumbing Status Report - Source: SpaceRef South Padre Island in Texas. Cardiac research and orbital plumbing were the Monday highlights for the Expedition 64 crew aboard the International Space Station. Flight Engineer Kate Rubins peered through a microscope at heart tissue samples today for the Cardinal Heart study. The microgravity study may provide new insights and advanced therapies for heart conditions on Earth and in space. For the Vascular Echo experiment today, Flight Engineer Victor Glover strapped on a Doppler probe to his right leg to scan his femoral artery during a light exercise session. The cardiovascular study, running since March 2015 on the orbiting lab, is looking at how living in space stiffens the arteries.

AMBULANCE HEROES

The extraordinary mission of the ambulance and crew You see at least one ambulance a day on the road. Here’s what’s inside those emergency vehicles that are equipped to transport the sick and the injured to the hospital. There are several organizations with a fleet of ambulances, among them, the hospitals, Philippine Red Cross, local government units, and private companies offering that service, like the Lifeline. The types of ambulances indicates the medical equipment and medicines each carry. There’s the basic and advance life support ambulances and the “ER on wheels” of Lifeline. The ambulances have saved thousands of lives but the stories behind the heroic acts of the crew who risked their own lives to do that are usually only shared among private groups. Despite the risks, they continue to follow the mission to respond to an emergency to save lives.
