Panel discusses myths, facts of COVID vaccines among Blacks, Hispanics

Tammi Brown rolled up her sleeve at an outdoor ceremony at the Chatham County Health Department on Dec. 15 and as Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Commissioner of Health Dr. Kathleen Toomey looked on, she became one of the first people in Georgia to get the COVID-19 vaccine.  As the Chatham County Nurse Manager, Brown likes to lead by example. And like the other five panelists who will be joining her 6 p.m. Thursday for a public discussion about the facts and myths of the COVID-19 vaccine, she wants to know why some people don t want the vaccine. One recurrent theme stands out as she talks to the vaccine reluctant, even other healthcare workers.

Chatham County Commission starts year with new chairman, commissioners

Greeting his colleagues with a fist bump, Chester Ellis took his seat as chairman of the Chatham Commission for the first time on Friday along with four new commissioners during the first meeting of the year. Ellis succeeded former Chairman Al Scott, who met his term limit for the seat. Along with Ellis, who formerly served as commissioner for District 8, new members  Larry “Gator” Rivers, Tanya Milton, Aaron Whitely and Kenneth Adams were sworn in earlier this month. They join returning commission members Helen Stone, Bobby Lockett, Pat Farrell and Dean Kicklighter.  One of the first items for the new commission was a bimonthly COVID-19 update from Coastal Health District Director Dr. Lawton Davis. Following the update, which largely surrounded the ongoing local vaccination efforts, Ellis said he has volunteered to receive the vaccine publicly to help combat the skepticism surrounding it and encouraged other commissioners to do the same.

Savannah holding first Kwanzaa Krawl Savannah holding first Kawanzaa Krawl By Bria Bolden | December 25, 2020 at 6:43 PM EST - Updated December 26 at 9:54 AM SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Saturday is not only the first day of Kwanzaa, but it’s also a day some city leaders, artists and business owners hope will showcase Savannah’s African-American restaurants, art, and culture. Saturday is the first day of Kwanzaa and for many black artists and businesses across the city, it’ll also be a new way to generate some much-needed revenue many missed out on during the pandemic. The seven-night event will highlight some of Savannah’s black-owned restaurants. Alderwoman Kesha Gibson-Carter says it’s time for Savannahians to support our black businesses, especially after very few received funding from the CARES Act.
