Iris Mary Lucchese

Mrs. Iris Mary Lucchese, age 97 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, with family by her side. Iris was born on August 10, 1923 in Truro, Cornwall, England.  Iris overcame every challenge that arose in her life, from childhood illness, to the Depression in England, to witnessing the Battle of Britain and surviving the bombing of London during World War II.  Iris emigrated from England to Canada after the War.  Her experience as a telephone operator in London made her a natural fit as a dispatcher for Lacey’s Taxi.  She met the love of her life, Lino Lucchese, and they were married for 40 years.  In 1958 they purchased Lacey’s Taxi which they operated for 36 years.  Iris and Lino loved to travel and visited many places around the world, including many trips to Italy and England.

Manitoba church breaks health restrictions on Easter Sunday

MORDEN Many churches across Manitoba are finding creative alternatives to celebrate Easter, but not all are adhering to public health restrictions. On Sunday morning in Morden, Man., Easter hymns were echoing from the Christian Church of Morden. In a now-deleted post online, the church told parishioners it was breaking health orders to hold a full Easter service. After many thoughts, prayers and according to our understanding of the bible, we came to the conclusion that we can no longer obey the Manitoba health orders. Livestream services are no substitute for in-person gatherings, read part of the church s two-page statement.

Applications now open for the community garden program

The Community Development County of Quinte is currently accepting applications for the garden program this year. The Belleville non-profit organization has been able to coordinate and help support the creation of 127 raised gardens in seven different locations in the city. Participants not only have a free and dedicated space to grow produce, but these community gardens also support the supply of fresh produce that CDC Quinte supplies to local families in need.  Jim Mallabar, the Community Garden Coordinator, notes this week that the garden program  “impacted more than 1,000 people.”   Here are where the gardens are located: 160 Roblin Road
