Meet the students trying to simplify clinical trial recruitment for veterans

(photo courtesy Ethan Ocasio) A group of Northern Virginia high school students is hoping to make it a little easier for vulnerable individuals to connect with clinical trials that might benefit them – with the help of an app they ve been developing over the course of nearly two years.   Ethan Ocasio, Shreeja Kikkisetti and Neeyanth Kopparapu created the Clinical Trial Selector tool in the summer of 2019, as part of the AI Tech Sprint run by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Artificial Intelligence Institute.    The problem we re trying to solve came from patients not being able to find trials they re eligible for, and experimenters unable to find people to participate, said Kikkisetti.

Virginia lawmakers throw out aimed at increasing diversity at elite schools | WTOP

Legislation that supporters say would increase diversity at some of Virginia’s most elite schools failed in the state Senate on Thursday as a committee decided to scrap the bill “indefinitely.” The move followed a passionate debate within the Senate Health and Education Committee during which Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw, D-Fairfax, said his constituents were “overwhelmingly” against it. “My emails ran almost 20 or 30 to 1 against what we’re proposing to do,” Saslaw said. The admissions debate has been gaining steam particularly in Northern Virginia at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, located in Fairfax County, one of the Governor’s Schools that has been ranked as the top public high school in the country.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) The coronavirus pandemic is again upending the daily routines of the tradition-bound Virginia General Assembly. The body that traces its lineage back more than four centuries to 1619 has been working under extraordinary circumstances, legislating to a substantial degree by video conference. The situation has led to persistent technical difficulties, an uncharacteristically profane hot mic situation and more serious complaints from lawmakers and advocates alike. Critics say legislating over Zoom has limited transparency, stifled public participation and diluted the democratic process. “If we were to do this year in and year out, I would think it was terrible. I mean, given our situation, I think it’s OK, said Megan Rhyne, executive director of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government.
