Mathews High School junior Jordan Hunley placed second in the VSBA Eastern Region Art Contest this spring for her painting, “The Tide Mill of Poplar Grove” (above). Leah Hyde of The Elementary School of Mathews, meanwhile, took third place among elementary students for her work, “The Journey to the Top” (image below). Those two students, along with Thomas Hunter Middle School contest entrant Layla McBurney, will be recognized by the Mathews County School Board at its April 20 regular monthly meeting.

Thomas Hunter Middle School fifth grade students received a present from their teachers last Wednesday which included treats and a copy of the book, “Dear Mr. Henshaw.” Fifth grade team members, pictured from left at the gift pick-up, include Elaine Bausone, special education teacher, Kim Davis, teacher assistant, Crystal Coleman, social studies teacher, and Tracy Whitehurst, language arts teacher. Pictured below is fifth grade student Michael Wiatt holding one of the gift bags.
The fifth grade students at Thomas Hunter Middle School, Mathews, received a special surprise from their teachers last Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Between the hours of 8-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m., fifth graders stopped by to pick up a gift bag from their teachers which included a candy cane, a hot cocoa packet, juice, goldfish, sour straws, chocolate candy, Swedish fish and a copy of the book, “Dear Mr. Henshaw,” written by Beverly Cleary.
