Manager Charlie Montoyo provided an update on the Toronto Blue Jays long list of injured pitchers ahead of Wednesday s matchup against the Atlanta Braves.
Montoyo said that Thomas Hatch, who s been dealing with a right-elbow issue since mid-March, is scheduled to throw two or three innings of a simulation game on Thursday. He is currently on the 60-day injured list.
Right-handed reliever Rafael Dolis is expected to throw a bullpen session on Friday. The 33-year-old left the Blue Jays game against the Houston Astros on May 7 with right-calf tightness.
TORONTO It’s clear Nate Pearson is going to contribute in the big leagues this season.
His ultimate role with the Toronto Blue Jays, however, is completely up for debate at this point, simply because it’s evident there’s a lot of refinement needed in order to find success against big-league bats.
Over a 20.1 inning sample size now since his debut last July, Pearson has walked 18 batters.
That’s obviously not going to give him a chance to succeed.
In fact, it’s hard to find something good to say about Pearson’s start Sunday against the Houston Astros, admittedly a tough lineup for any pitcher to go through.
The logical extension to such an exercise is then rolling those projections up to the team level, and I intended to do so near the beginning of the year but didn’t get around to putting it all together. Even though it’s now a month into the season, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at what things look like, and then subsequently some of the best and worst outcome.
Having created 49 different outcomes for of 17 regulars according to a 7x7 matrix of playing time, I then did an abbreviated version for the eight relievers who figured to be most significant: Ryan Borucki, Tyler Chatwood, Rafael Dolis, Thomas Hatch, Tim Mayza, Julian Merryweather, David Phelps and Jordan Romano (Kirby Yates was already known to be out for the year at this point). Since relievers pitch fewer innings and accordingly have a much narrower range of outcomes, five innings scenarios and a 7x5 matrix of 35 outcomes sufficed.
