The forgotten history of the teenage immigrant who invented Durex condoms Lucian Landa’s centrality to the modern condom has gone unrecognised. Jung Yeon-Je/AFP Around 975 Durex condoms are sold every minute. The global condom market is predicted to grow to over $11 billion by 2023, and Durex is in the privileged position of being the world’s most popular brand. Yet until recently, the young man who invented Durex’s mass-produced condom had been forgotten – even by the manufacturer itself. The origins of Durex go back to the London Rubber Company, which began trading in 1915 and specialised in importing modern, disposable condoms for re-sale in Great Britain. In 1932 the firm underwent a game-changing switch from wholesaling to fabrication, when it started manufacturing in-house under the Durex brand. Pendle Hospice s oldest volunteer has died aged 97

Kath Hancock at the Pendle Hospice shop A HOSPICE S oldest volunteer has died aged 97 after a short illness Great great grandma Kath Hancock, of Trawden, had spent more than 18 years working at the Pendle Hospice’s shop in Colne and on her 96th birthday was featured on ITV’s Granada Reports. She retired from the hospice just over a year ago. Her family have asked for donations in Mrs Hancock s memory to be made to Pendleside. Mrs Hancock was born and brought up in Hull and moved to Trawden, aged 16, to escape the bombing during the Second World War. After the war she worked at Bannisters’ textile mill in Trawden laying patterns on the looms. She later moved to Bannisters’ Boundary Mill in Colne where she worked in the office.
