Council approves pickle ball lease | Merritt Herald

Pickle ball action at the Merritt Lawn Bowling facility has been approved by City Council. A recent grant by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District of $130,000 has made the lease a possibility, sharing the facility with the lawn bowling club by constructing four pickle ball courts. “With the dissolving of the Lawn Bowling Executive and limited play over the past couple years, this was a largely underutilized property,” said Sky McKeown, Director of Recreation & Facilities. McKeown spoke to the remaining members of the lawn bowling club around this time last year, who expressed their desire to share the facility due to dwindling numbers and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Properties near Spences Bridge evacuating, alert extended towards Merritt

An Evacuation Order has been issued for properties near the community of Spences Bridge. 169 properties fall under the order, which was issued by the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The Lytton Creek fire is threatening both structures and the safety of residents in the area. Due to the number of wildfires burning across the province, thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and take shelter in neighbouring communities. According to the TNRD: “There is a critical shortage of commercial accommodations in Kamloops and throughout the region. If your primary residence has been evacuated, we recommend that you arrange to stay with friends or family.”

The winds have also created “very smoky conditions … so getting in and being able to assess the true nature of that growth is what we’re doing right now and making sure we readjust our plans accordingly,” he said.
