By SARAH CAMMARATA | STARS AND STRIPES Published: May 19, 2021 WASHINGTON The Coast Guard’s importance in strengthening global economic, trade and environmental security, especially amid a tumultuous year of extreme weather events and the coronavirus pandemic, took center stage in President Joe Biden’s commencement address Wednesday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. “Being here together is a victory in and of itself, an important marker in the progress we ve made to turn the tide of this pandemic. It s a testament of the skill and military discipline [and] sense of responsibility you already embody,” Biden told the Class of 2021. Flanked by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz, Biden spoke to a crowd of 240 U.S. cadets, along with seven international cadets, at the academy’s campus in New London, Conn.

The Air Marshal National Council, a group that represents a portion of America’s roughly 2,000 air marshals, claimed the problem started following the violence at the Capitol on January 6, Fox News reported Friday. “Following that, some fearful lawmakers began requesting security not just on Capitol grounds, but to and from their districts and even to vacation spots,” the outlet continued: The Transportation Security Administration, which runs the Federal Air Marshal Service, began reassigning agents from “high risk” commercial flights to accompany members of Congress instead.
