Thailand fully prepared to handle people fleeing from Myanmar

BANGKOK, March 13 (Bernama): Anticipating a possible mass exodus from Myanmar following the escalation of violence as authorities crack down on anti-coup protests, Thailand has been getting ready to handle those fleeing the neighbouring country. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said security agencies and provincial authorities along Thailand-Myanmar border were ready to handle possible border crossings. They have taken steps to prepare facilities. So far, there has been no persons crossing the borders seeking asylum in Thailand due to the situation in Myanmar,” he said at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ weekly press conference, here, today. Local media reported that authorities in Thailand’s northernmost province of Chiang Rai had intercepted a group of eight Myanmar nationals - four men including two monks, and four women - who crossed from Myanmar’s border town of Tachileik into Thailand. The group was pushed back across the border.
