Plans kickstart on new riverside glamping experience

Premium Content Subscriber only A one-of-a-kind glamping experience will soon hit the Southern Downs, with a Severnlea tourist development the latest in a suite of new projects to be approved. An application to establish the intimate guest operation at 199 Stabilies Rd was first brought up with Southern Downs Regional Council in January. Gary Hayes and partners submitted the application on behalf of property owner Jo Sorbello, which proposed the construction of two glamping sites on the 5ha property backing onto the Severn River. The two sites will house a maximum of four guests and span 240 sqm, and each tent will include ensuites, ceiling fans and fixed power.

Southern Downs tourism battered despite lockdown lift

Premium Content Subscriber only The Southern Downs has been spared from its second consecutive Easter break decimated by a coronavirus lockdown, but the decision could prove too little, too late for some businesses. All Queenslanders are still required to carry masks outside their home, limit private gatherings to 30 people, and sit down in restaurants until April 15. The threat of an extended lockdown was enough to wipe out bookings at McNevin’s Warwick Motel for the second year in a row, with manager Debbie Bender reporting at least a 90 per cent loss. “(The lift) is good news, there’s no doubt about it, but the cancellations have already hit. You can’t blame (tourists) even one little bit, especially when it could change again,” Ms Bender said.
