The imminent advent of quantum computers is posing an online security risk.
The quantum computers, unlike the binary computers we commonly use today, can deal with immense amounts of data by running innumerable computations in parallel, or all at once.
Such ability allows hackers to carry out cryptanalytic attacks to steal data from the devices previously considered safe.
“When the quantum computers become prevalent, our current cybersecurity system will quickly become ineffective. It is like using the classical computing system of the 1950s in the 21st century,” said the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Chung Euisun, chairman of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, has won the 2021 Autocar Awards top accolade, the Issigonis Trophy, for his contribution to the global automotive industry, the company said on Wednesday.
Named after legendary car designer Sir Alec Issigonis, the trophy is awarded by Autocar, a weekly British auto magazine, to an individual who has played a significant role in helping to shape the future of the auto industry. Chung has overseen the Hyundai Motor Group, whose brands include Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, in transforming into one of the world s largest and most innovative car manufacturers, at the forefront of developing new technology including electric and hydrogen powertrains, connectivity and digital systems, Autocar said in a statement.
