The Walking Dead’s only villain-turned-protagonist, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has always been one of the series’ richest characters. Giving us a look at his life before he led the Saviors, before he wielded his baseball bat, and even before the zombie apocalypse could have made him even more fascinating. Instead,
The Walking Dead manages to tell Negan’s origin story without really telling us anything at all.

Here’s what we knew about Negan’s life, primarily thanks to his confession to Gabriel back in season six: he had a wife named Lucille (played here by Hilarie Burton Morgan, Jeffrey’s real-life spouse) who died of cancer after the dead rose from the grave. After she passed, he named his trademark baseball bat after her, which was a strange homage that nevertheless revealed his true affection, given that Negan freaked out when he thought the bat was lost.

The Walking Dead’s 10th season, which will premiere February 28, will include a look back at big bad-turned-mistrusted-anti-hero Negan and his life before the zombie apocalypse. Now, the show has released a small—okay, very small—glimpse of what’s in store.

Really, the clip (via Uproxx) is trying to imply Negan has done a heel turn—yet again—and has Maggie trapped somewhere, where the former Savior is threatening to murder her. Given that Maggie still wants Negan dead for killing her beloved Glenn, they’re definitely headed for a conflict, and Negan could turn the tables on her only to then start smarmily gloating he’s going to kill her, being his former

If the voice behind that pseudo-assurance doesn’t yet sound familiar, AMC also left fans a parting Season 10 gift on Twitter by sharing a first, ever-so-slight peek at the armor that Mercer — the comics crossover character played by Michael James Shaw — will be sporting when the series returns:

TWD picks up where the current Season 10 leaves off. The show concluded its penultimate season Sunday with ”Here’s Negan,” an episode that, in delving into the past of the troubled antagonist played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, also revealed his long-concealed last name — though we won’t spoil that here.

The Walking Dead ends its extended Season 10 by teasing a next season showdown between Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). When he's banished by Carol (Melissa McBride) amid increasing tensions at Alexandria, where the widowed Maggie now lives with her son Hershel (Kien Michael Spiller), memories of his late wife Lucille (Hilarie Burton Morgan) help Negan decide his future. The Season 10 finale ends with Negan returning to Alexandria with a swagger, a smirk — and a warning from Carol: "If you stay here, she will kill you."
"Here's Negan" diverges from the comic books when the exiled Negan returns to Alexandria. Years after Maggie decided against executing Negan for killing her husband, telling him he was "already worse than dead" behind bars, the Rhees must now live behind the same walls as the bat-swinging bad guy who murdered Glenn (Steven Yeun).

The Walking Dead. For all the criticism that those early episodes with Negan and the Saviors subsequently received, there was always something compelling about Morgan’s portrayal of the character. Even with all the cringeworthy “pants-shitting” talk they regularly saddled him with, the actor managed to take the malevolent villain and imbue him with charisma, charm, and menace in equal measure, making it all too easy to understand why he was the kind of person others would follow without question. He wasn’t relatable, but he made sense; the heightened camp elements of Morgan’s performance were part and parcel of the character, a way to cleverly depict the fact that

There, Negan has too much time to self-reflect and comes to a conclusion about his future.
