Traffic safety partners stress dangers of distracted driving

The California Highway Patrol, California Office of Traffic Safety and Impact Teen Drivers are working together this April to remind Californians of the dangers of not giving the road their full attention when behind the wheel as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 3,142 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2019 nationwide.
That same year in California, there were at least 18,698 crashes from distracted driving that resulted in 108 deaths and more than 13,500 injuries.

“Not driving distracted is a simple, but significant behavior change,” Farmer said. “The goal is to increase compliance with the hands-free cell phone law and keep people safe.”
Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or other electronic device while behind the wheel. Motorists under age 18 are not allowed to use a phone for any reason, including hands-free.
If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over and park at a safe location, the Police Department said. Drivers should silence their phones or put the phone out of reach, such as the glove box or trunk.

ONTARIO - The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. is currently accepting nominations for the Outstanding Senior Citizen and Community Service Award. Nominations can be completed online at aaa5ohio.org or by requesting a form to be mailed to you. The deadline for nominations is May 28.
Award recipients from a nine-county area (one awardee from each county) will be honored by Area Agency on Aging. Nominees must be at least 60 years of age, a legal resident of Ohio for at least five years, and have made significant contributions to the community. A husband and wife may receive the award jointly when both have been involved in community service. One Outstanding Senior Citizen Award will be presented for each county in the agency s service area.

If you break the state’s distracted driving laws after July 1, the penalties will become more severe. A violation for using a handheld cellular phone or texting while driving will result in a fine and also add a point to the driver’s record for each violation occurring within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense.
