DEARBORN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) As traffic begins to pick up across the country, with increased vaccinations and decreased pandemic restrictions, AAA – The Auto Club Group reminds drivers about the importance of focusing on the road ahead and not on their smartphones during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to 2019 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Distracted driving crashes killed 3,142 people in the United States – an average of 9 deaths per day. That number was up 10 percent from the year before (2,839 deaths in 2018). In Michigan alone, there were 64 fatal crashes involving a distracted driver, resulting in 71 fatalities in 2019.

The goal of the annual campaign is to promote enforcement and awareness of state and local texting and distracted-driving laws, a news release said Wednesday. It’s also part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” effort. Michigan State Police’s Criminal Justice Information Center says there were more than 18,000 crashes causes by distracted driving in the state in 2019.

Although all forms are considered dangerous, as they increase the risk of crashing, texting continues to be the most common distraction, the Monday release said.
