El Paso County led the state in the number of traffic deaths and speeding tickets in 2020, according to data from the State Patrol and the Department of Transportation.
More than 600 people died on Colorado streets, roads, and highways last year, CDOT data show. El Paso County led the state with 84 of those deaths, including a record 50 in Colorado Springs.
Adams County had the second most traffic fatalities with 53, followed by Arapahoe County with 50.
The state agencies are looking to drastically reduce the number of fatal crashes in 2021.
“With the start of a new year, this is a good time for all of us to renew our commitment to driving safely,” CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew said.

LAFAYETTE, La. - Over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of vehicle crashes on our nationâs roads. Acadiana Regional Safety Coordinator Ron Czajkowski is encouraging drivers to put down the phone. To build awareness of this issue among youth in Acadiana, the Acadiana Regional Safety Coalition is promoting Project Yellow Light, a Distracted Driving PSA contest for students in colleges and high schools across the U.S. The PSA categories are billboard, video, and radio. The scholarships will be given in each category for college and high school students, and range in value from $8,000 to $2,000.
TUCSON (KVOA) - The Distracted Driving law went into effect last spring with law enforcement giving drivers warnings if they were on their cell phones talking or texting.
As of Jan. 1, people have started getting tickets. This is a law two mothers hope will save lives.
When people get pulled over for distracted driving, besides the ticket, they also get a brochure that says the law is in effect and reminds the driver to keep their hands off the phone when they are behind the wheel. We never thought it would happen to us, Deborah Garcia said,
But in 2019, it did when Garcia lost her son. Julie Festerling also lost her daughter, Caitlin in the same crash.
Much of the decision is given over to the definition of the words use and operating in the Motor Vehicle Act. Both words appear to be sticking points in other distracted driving cases. The justice s ruling also adds to a list of distracted driving tickets to get tossed out of court after drivers appealed – often on the grounds that they were not touching their phones. Like many other cases, Bleau s situation involved him placing his cell phone in a cup holder in the centre console. The decision says Bleau was driving to work and playing a podcast from his phone wirelessly through the truck stereo.
OPINION: Twin Falls Distracted Driving Continues Despite New Law
An ordinance that was passed in July of 2020 that made it punishable by fine to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Idaho while handling a cell phone, appears to have not been processed fully by a large number of motorists in Twin Falls.
Idaho State Ordinance 49-1401A was created with the sole intention of reducing the number of traffic accidents and fatalities caused by distracted drivers. Prohibiting the handling of
mobile electronic devices, such as cell phones, tablets and other communication agents while operating a vehicle could mean safer highways for Idaho drivers.
