The argument over what should become of the old White Bay power station and adjoining land in Rozelle has been raging for 40 years, with more than a dozen proposals from casino to naval base.
As Jamie Parker, the state member for Balmain and former mayor of what was then Leichhardt Council, puts it: White Bay is the graveyard where thought bubbles go to die.

The defunct coal-fired power station, built before and during World War I, looked set for demolition after it closed in 1984. But instead it survived long enough to be appreciated for its historical and cultural value, and was listed on the heritage register in 1999.
Delivering Renewable Energy From West NSW to 1.4 Million Homes
NSW is pushing ahead with plans to boost its renewable energy footprint with a plan to help distribute enough power for 1.4 million homes from a project based in the state’s central west.
High-voltage transmission lines and substations designed to bring online more renewable energy, will be part of the project which NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean on Dec. 17 said has been deemed critical infrastructure.
“Transmission is such a critical piece of the energy infrastructure puzzle,” he said.
“We have seen huge investment interest in generation and storage projects … and projects like this will ensure we can get that capacity into the grid and into homes and business across the state.”

Government split over bushfire land clearing rules

NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean is reportedly concerned about the impact a controversial bushfire protection policy will have on bushland as a fire-prone council in his own electorate seeks to be exempt.
Hornsby Liberal mayor Philip Ruddock said a rural boundary clearing code being brought before cabinet next week could potentially result in the clearing of 1035 hectares, or half the vegetation on rural-zoned lands within the local government area.
