Covid Live Updates: Congress Closes in on Relief Bill; 46,000 Businesses Slash 401(K) Funding

The U.S. blew past records for daily new Covid-19 cases and virus deaths on Wednesday, as the national crisis continues to worsen. More than 247,000 new infections and more than 3,600 Covid deaths were reported on Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University data, the highest single-day tallies yet. A record 113,000 people are currently hospitalized with the virus, according to The Atlantic s COVID Tracking Project. The new and disheartening highs come at the same time the U.S. is beginning a vaccine rollout. The U.S. is recording at least 215,729 new Covid-19 cases and at least 2,570 virus-related deaths each day, based on a seven-day average calculated by CNBC using Johns Hopkins University data.

2019 a banner year for 401(k) employee participation Getty Images/iStockphoto The percentage of employees contributing to their 401(k) plans hit a record high in 2019, according to the Plan Sponsor Council of America s 63rd annual survey released Thursday. The survey showed 87.3% of participants made contributions to their retirement plans last year, up from 84.2% in 2018 and higher than the record 84.9% hit in both 2017 and 2016 . Also, more than 90% had an account balance, an improvement from 89.3% the previous year. Average employee contributions, however, retreated slightly to 7.6% of pay, from 7.7% the year before. The slight decrease in employee contributions was offset with an increase in employer contributions, which rose to 5.3% from 5.2% in 2018.
