Motor neurone disease damage could be REVERSED with existing drugs

Motor neurone disease damage could be REVERSED with existing drugs Shivali Best For Mailonline © Provided by Daily Mail MailOnline logo Nerve damage caused by motor neurone disease (MND) could soon be reversed using existing drugs, a promising new study has revealed. Researchers have pinpointed an issue in patients nerve cells that depletes energy levels in the mitochondria - the power supply to the motor neurones. The results of the study are now being used to look for existing drugs that boost mitochondrial function and may be able to be repurposed to treat MND. © Provided by Daily Mail Researchers have pinpointed an issue in patients nerve cells that depletes energy levels in the mitochondria - the power supply to the motor neurones

Whale sharks lingering at tourist hotspots at risk of boat strikes

Whale sharks lingering at tourist hotspots at risk of boat strikes Ian Randall For Mailonline © Provided by Daily Mail MailOnline logo Lingering at coastal tourist hotspots is putting injured whale sharks at a greater risk of boat strikes, a study of the larger, slow-moving filter-feeders has found.  Researchers from York and the Maldives warned that wounded sharks stay in certain, favourable locations for three times longer than their uninjured counterparts. This means they not only miss out on seasonal food sources in other areas, but that they also put themselves at greater risk of further injury as a result of human activity.

Yellowstone s reawakened geyser does not mean the big one is soon

Yellowstone s reawakened geyser does not mean the big one is soon Stacy Liberatore For Dailymail.com © Provided by Daily Mail MailOnline logo Yellowstone National Park s Steamboat Geyser lay dormant for more than three years before reawakening in 2018 and has since erupted 129 times - sparking concern that it could lead to the volcanic big one. A team from the University of California – Berkeley took up the task of uncovering the truth beneath the world s tallest active geyser and found few indications of magma movement, which is key for an eruption. Researchers collected data from geysers around the world and found that due to Steamboat s size, the geyser stores a large amount of water that provides energy to power explosions. It has a reservoir of about 82 feet below ground and a 377-foot tall column.
