President Joe Biden called for the U.S. corporate tax rate to rise from 21% to 28% in order to help pay for his $2.5 trillion infrastructure plan, but tax experts are divided as to whether doing so is actually good for the country.
The increase and subsidy combination would raise approximately $740 billion over this decade, according to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, which on its own would pay for a sizable amount of Biden’s infrastructure plan.
Opponents of the increase, however, argue that it will dramatically reduce private investment and cost workers’ wages and jobs.
“If you raise the corporate tax, there is going to be less infrastructure investment,” Chris Edwards, director of tax policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
US Grant to Wuhan Lab to Enhance Bat-Based Coronaviruses Was Never Scrutinized by HHS Review Board: NIH
An oversight board created to scrutinize research that would enhance highly dangerous pathogens did not review a National Institutes of Health grant that funded a lab in Wuhan, China, to genetically modify bat-based coronaviruses.
Experts say the NIH grant describes scientists conducting gain-of-function research, a risky area of study that, in this case, made SARS-like viruses even more contagious. Federal funding for gain-of-function research was temporarily suspended in 2014 due to widespread scientific concerns it risked leaking supercharged viruses into the human population.
Federal funding for gain-of-function research was resumed in late 2017 after the Potential Pandemic Pathogens Control and Oversight (P3CO) Framework was formed within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The review board is tasked with critically evaluating whether grants that involve enha

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Penn., said it is “very concerning” that the federal infectious disease research organization led by Dr. Anthony Fauci bypassed federal oversight of a grant that funded a lab in Wuhan, China, to genetically modify bat-based coronaviruses.
Infectious disease experts say the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases’ grant to the nonprofit group EcoHealth Alliance, which involved the transfer of $600,000 to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, described scientists conducting “gain-of-function” research on SARS-like viruses to make them even more contagious.
