Introduction
Social media was abuzz, last week, with public reaction (mostly negative) to the comparison by the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, of the ban on open grazing of cattle in the South, with a similar (albeit hypothetical) restriction on the sale of auto spare parts in Northern Nigeria. He made that allusion as a reaction to that part of a 12-point declaration by the 17 Governors of Southern Nigeria (“the Asaba Declaration”) two weeks ago. Were those criticisms justified, or was the Hon. Attorney-General right? We shall attempt a few – admittedly subjective – answers, as well as a review of other seemingly controversial parts of what has now turned out to be the Mother of all Declarations (pardon the pun).

It is a day to Promote the Freedom of the Press, to Fight Against Oppressive or Tyrannical Governments that seek to curtail this fundamental right, and also a day to honour our fallen heroes – innocent journalists like Dele Giwa, Bagauda Kaltho and Chinedu Offoaro who lost their lives at the hands of brutal dictators or “disappeared” on account of simply discharging their duties! We pay tribute to the likes of Tunde Thompson and others who spent years in jail, for simply doing their work as journalists during the dark days of military dictatorship in Nigeria. We pay tribute to functionaries of the Newswatch Magazine, Tell Magazine, the Guardian, Tribune, Punch, Champion, Vanguard, and Daily Trust Newspaper among other print media outfits that risked everything in the course of providing sp

THE Nigeria Press Council has condemned certain media publications on the recent attacks and killings in some states in the South-East region.
The Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr. Francis Nwosu said the publications are “unprofessional, sensational and capable of escalating the attacks and igniting reprisal killings’’.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, Nwosu admonished media houses and practitioners to abide by the Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists.
He urged journalists to eschew reports that can infringe on the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary specifically deplored the front-page report in the Daily Trust Newspaper publication of April 5, stressing that the headline and the story are “sensational, inciting and unprofessional.
