Teens paint posters, advocate for police abolition at EFBL block party

About 30 Evanston youth painted banners demanding police abolition at a Sunday “Reclaim The Block Party” hosted by Evanston Fight for Black Lives. Attendees also painted “Abolish EPD” in white capital letters on Elmwood Avenue in front of Evanston Police Department. “This building being the police department this is the symbol of their presence in our community, their power in our community,” EFBL organizer Mollie Hartenstein said. “It’s a symbol of not just policing but of how misaligned our community’s priorities are when we have an entire building dedicated to policing.”  Hartenstein said the group organized the event to make a political statement and build community. She also said EFBL wanted to bring the community together in the wake of the Chicago police killings of 13-year-old Adam Toledo and 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez.

Downtown Evanston Farmers Market reopens

The Downtown Evanston Farmers’ Market opened its 46th season on Saturday after local businesses cultivated product lineups, outlined COVID-19 policies and packed trucks.  The market will run Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. from now until Nov. 6 at the corner of University Place and Oak Avenue. To mitigate the risk of COVID-19, it will be open from 7 to 7:30 a.m. to seniors and immunocompromised shoppers. Manager Myra Gorman said the market is implementing the same COVID-19 procedures used in 2020, including a no-touch market, handwashing stations, masking and social distancing.  Gorman said the Link program, which provides individuals who qualify for food stamps increased buying power in the market, will continue to be helpful cost-saving measures.

(Northwestern University) EVANSTON, IL Mike Polisky has been appointed athletic director of Northwestern University, school officials announced Monday, days after attorneys for the university and Polisky filed a motion seeking to dismiss a federal lawsuit from a former cheerleader. Northwestern President Morton Schapiro announced Polisky, the deputy athletic director for external affairs since 2010, as his pick to succeed former Athletic Director Jim Phillips, who was hired in December as Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner. After our search committee conducted a thorough nationwide search and identified a number of strong candidates, I appointed Mike Polisky to build on our unprecedented successes and to lead Northwestern Athletics and Recreation into a new era, Schapiro said, announcing the hiring.

Skokie residents join local groups in rally against police brutality

  in rallying against police brutality at a rally Saturday.  The rally, held at Oakton Community Center Park, came less than a week following the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The event invited community members to “stand together” in solidarity with those across the country mourning loss and violence against Black, brown and BIPOC people. The Abolition Coalition of Skokie is a group of five BIPOC mothers with the mission of abolishing “the anti-Blackness and white supremacy” that perpetuate system racism in housing, healthcare, education, economics, policing and government policies. The group began organizing after sharing experiences of discrimination in several districts and in January held a press conference addressing racism in Niles Township High Schools District 219. 

Community leaders discuss environmental justice at Thursday panel

Evanston community members and environmental leaders discussed the Church Street Waste Transfer Station, the city’s environmental policies and other local concerns at a virtual panel Thursday. The event was part of Citizens’ Greener Evanston’s “Earth Week for Everyone” series, which is taking place Thursday through Saturday in honor of Earth month. Kumar Jensen, Evanston’s chief sustainability and resilience officer, said there has been increased collaboration between environmentalist and racial justice groups in recent years. In September 2020, the Evanston City Council adopted the Environmental Justice Resolution, which aims to ensure that residents have equal access to environmental assets and protection from environmental harms.
