Laowai: Hidden cocktail and dim sum parlour opening soon

The name of the game at Laowai is to explore and indulge, as the team behind this concept which was five years in the making, we might add – has worked tirelessly to ensure every detail, ingredient, and dish on the menu tells a significant and meaningful story. Laowai’s impressive drink menu truly reads like a book, as there are two pages dedicated to each of the 12 cocktails, complete with an original illustration and description of the inspiration behind the beverage too. Once you glance through the story of each carefully crafted libation, you’ll reach the baijiu section. We’re told this list offers the best selection of the popular Chinese liquor in all of Canada.

Traditional parking meters to be replaced by pay stations in Vancouver

The contract will be executed over the next three to four years, through the delivery of brand new parking equipment which will upgrade about 8,000 existing mixed-type on-street parking spaces across the city. While the pay stations that exist still accept coins, and some of them allow you to pay online, you’ll also be able to use your credit card at the upgraded stations, which will be able to interface with existing smart pay stations. According to the city, the traditional parking meters that were once commonplace are prone to vandalism and theft, which renders many of them inoperable. Earlier this year, Alina Cheng, the City of Vancouver’s director of parking management, told Daily Hive Urbanized that “this is about improving customer experience.”

Major redevelopment with luxury hotel envisioned next to Robson Square

Jon Stovell, the president and CEO of Reliance Properties, told Daily Hive Urbanized his company is in the process of selecting an international architectural firm to develop some redevelopment design concepts soon. He says it will be a mixed-use development, with an upscale hotel as a “strong consideration” given its location in the very active core of the city centre, and its close proximity to Hotel Vancouver. “We think it’s one of the most important sites in the whole city. It is the cultural heart of the city, so we’re talking to quite a wide range of really global-level architectural firms,” said Stovell.
