Yemenis Accuse Houthis of Monopolizing Cooking Gas Supply in Sanaa

Thursday, 15 April, 2021 - 09:45 A vendor selling local crafts to a customer in a popular market in Sanaa (Reuters) Asharq Al-Awsat Houthi militia authorities have hiked the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, otherwise known as cooking gas, in areas under their control, locals reported to Asharq Al-Awsat. Today, buying a gas canister in the Houthi-run Yemeni capital, Sanaa, is 180% more expensive than in the nearby government-controlled governorate of Marib. The sharp increase in prices triggered a shortage crisis at a time international reports are warning that an estimated 20 million Yemenis might not be able to secure their meals this Ramadan.

Nigeria: Federal Government Set To Spread Gas Distribution Channels Across Local Government Areas

Nzube Nlebedim, Nigeria Field Editor April 15, 2021 Image: The Guardian Nigeria The Nigerian government is planning on opening mini gas distribution channels across the local governments in the country.   This was revealed last Friday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigerian Women for Liquefied Petroleum Gas project, organized by the federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Zigma Gas Limited, and the National Centre for Women’s Development (NCWD).  Brenda Ataga, Special Assistant on LPG to H.E. Chief Timipre Sylva, noted the importance of gas as a cleaner energy source as opposed to firewood. “The ministry is targeting to ameliorate the energy challenge in Nigeria, and clean cooking gas is key in this regard because 70% greenhouse emissions are caused by deforestation. This LPG project will enable us to empower rural women to use a more cleaner energy source for cooking,” she said. 

UPDATE 1-Algeria s Sonatrach says it has terminated Ain Tsila contract

By Reuters Staff (Adds details, background) ALGIERS, April 15 (Reuters) - Algerian state oil company Sonatrach said on Thursday it had terminated a 2004 contract with Petroceltic PLC, which was later bought by Sunny Hill Energy, for exploration and production in the Ain Tsila gas field. Sonatrach, which has faced years of declining energy output, said in an emailed statement that the termination was in accordance with the contract, and that it had taken the step after Petroceltic failed to comply with contractual obligations. Algeria is trying to encourage investment in its energy sector by international oil companies to reverse its falling production levels, which have hit state finances.

Dangote Cement moves to end cement supply shortage, suspends export from its terminals

Africa’s most diversified manufacturing conglomerate, Dangote Group has revealed that it has suspended exports from its commissioned export terminals. The Group made this move in an effort to cut the country’s cement supply gap and keep cement prices low in Nigeria. According to a news report by The Punch, the Group Executive Director, Strategy, Portfolio Development and Capital Projects, Devakumar Edwin made this revelation while speaking at a press briefing in Lagos this week. The Director explained that the surge in the demand for cement products has led to a supply gap of about 40% in the country’s cement market, and like every other player the Dangote Group is working actively to close out this gap.
