Bucks, Montco hold onto fastnachts, Lenten traditions amid COVID

The staff of Lochel s Bakery in Hatboro worked around the clock over Valentine s Day weekend, but they weren t making chocolate treats.  Instead, they were preparing at least 15,000 fastnachts, or Fast Night doughnuts for customers to mark Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, the day that precedes the start of Lent.  For Christians, Lent is a time of reflection, fast and penitence before rejoicing in Christ s Resurrection at Easter. But before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras celebrations and the German tradition of eating fastnachts, takes place. And, as with all aspects of life during the pandemic, the purchasing of fastnachts and the distribution of ashes the next day will be different this year due to the need to social distance.
