Contagious Faith in a Church that saves

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Apr 27, 2021 | In Reviews Deeply committed Catholics have been very concerned about the Church’s response to Covid. Most of us have at least a vague suspicion that something is very wrong when the Church shuts down her sacramental ministry for any reason, especially if she seems to be simply following secular political directives as if that agenda is not very different from her own. At first this was uncharted territory, so perhaps the initial reaction was confusion. But it was uncharted because the Church as a whole has never in her 2,000 year history restricted her mission so much or so quickly as she did in the year of Our Lord 2020.

The inexpressible sadness of Christian failure

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Apr 23, 2021 I suppose we have all awakened on a spiritually foggy morning and wondered what’s the use. Compared to the better olden days, during which Christ appeared to have triumphed throughout the West and the Church made a good stab at evangelizing the world, we seem so utterly fruitless. Every day now, for a full lifetime and more, each step appears to be a step backwards, and each triumph a grace of suffering only. Sometimes it seems that, one after another, each new hope has left Him and fled. Writers like to remind us that it is always darkest before the dawn, but do we have any reason to expect the dawn?

I knew this for different reasons in each case, but with a certainty which makes it impossible for me to go wrong in recommending them to others. My only regret is that I did not call attention to them earlier, as two of the three though worth reading at any time were ideal for Lent.

Christ s miracles tell more than those of the Old Testament

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Mar 16, 2021 The Word of God is present in different ways in different things. It is through the Word, after all, that all things that are not God came to be. But let us permit St. John to tell us the full story: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God…. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. [
