Bradley Douglas Brokaw, age 53, of Fort Dodge, died unexpectedly December 15, 2020. Brad was born to Jeri and Bill Brokaw Jr. on November 27, 1967, at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Brad was baptized in the Christian faith and grew up in Fort Dodge, graduating from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1986. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa prior to transferring to Iowa State University. At Iowa State Brad was a member of the TKE Fraternity, and graduated in 1990 with a degree in Business Finance. Following graduation, Brad made his home in Dallas, Texas, for the next twelve years working in the field of finance. Upon returning to Iowa, Brad met Emma Fajardo and was joined in marriage in 2008. The couple made their home in Pomeroy, Iowa, and were blessed with a son, Dylan. Later the family moved to Fort Dodge where they have made their home since.

bshea@messengernews.net A man suffered serious burns when his improvised dwelling in a wooded area of Fort Dodge caught fire early Wednesday morning. ”He was lucky to escape out of there,” Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said. The man was initially treated at UnityPoint Health Trinity Regional Medical Center. He was then taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Hergenreter said he was suffering from very serious burns on his upper body. He said the man had been living in a ”tent-like structure” made of wood and other materials that was in the woods between Mason Memorial Drive and Kenyon Road. The man had a campfire burning and the flames spread to that structure while he was inside, according to Hergenreter.

edecious@messengernews.net Fort Dodge Police are investigating a shot fired Monday evening that left a 17-year-old with a foot wound. Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Sixth Avenue North in reference to someone being shot at approximately 7:40 p.m. Upon arrival, they learned that the victim had been transported to UnityPoint Health Trinity Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle. After finding the teenager shot in the foot at the hospital, officers learned that he had been speaking with a family member in the alley near the reported location when a gun the relative was holding was discharged.

edecious@messengernews.net A Coalville man was arrested Sunday night after police say he struck a McDonald’s employee with a sledgehammer before hitting the victim with a pickup truck. Christian Davalos, 18, is charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, in relation to the incident at approximately 9:55 p.m. Fort Dodge Police responded to the restaurant at 2509 Fifth Ave. S. for a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. The victim told police that he was confronted by Davalos and one other man as they arrived to work about a “burglary” the alleged assailants accused the victim of committing, the criminal complaint said.
