He was at the Northland Regional Corrections Facility on Friday for the battle of the bands. There are many talented musos in prison, sadly, and some amateurs as well who are very talented. They formed a couple of bands and had a play-off as well as a group made up of Corrections officers. Families came in including a lot of partners and mothers. It was wonderful to see people relaxing and laughing and enjoying the occasion, Mr Davis says.
Since Labour got in four years ago with a promise to reduce the prison population by 30 percent over 15 years, there are 860 fewer Māori inside, a drop of 16 percent.

Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says the expansion of a prison kapa haka competition is a reflection of the fact access to culture is a right, not a privilege.
Hōkai Rangi Whakataetae Kapa Haka competition will take place in all 18 prisons, up from right in last year’s pilot.
Tutors from the community will teach the prisoners, with performances and judging taking place in June and July and the winners announced in August.
Mr Davis says it’s a chance for prisoners and staff to celebrate Māori culture while also building teamwork, discipline and the sense of achievement that comes from kapa haka.
Inter-prison kapa haka competition launched
14 APRIL 2021
For the first time, all 18 prisons in New Zealand will be invited to participate in an inter-prison kapa haka competition, Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis announced today.
The 2021 Hōkai Rangi Whakataetae Kapa Haka will see groups prepare and perform kapa haka for experienced judges who visit each prison and ultimately choose winners across a variety of categories.
Kelvin Davis said the competition supports the aims of Corrections’ strategy Hōkai Rangi by bringing participants closer to their culture, identity and language.
“Access to culture is a fundamental right, not a privilege, regardless of a person’s circumstances,” Kelvin Davis said.
